Expo 2023 Doha Hosts Influential Panel on Global Climate Action through Technology and Innovation

Leaders and experts gather to discuss climate challenges and technological innovations in the fight against global warming.

The Congress Centre at Expo 2023 Doha set the stage for a pivotal discussion on the transformative impact of technology in the global climate effort. The panel discussion, "Technology and Innovation as a Driver for Ambitious Climate Action Globally," convened a cadre of esteemed leaders and experts to explore how cutting-edge innovations can be harnessed to address pressing climate challenges.

Moderated by Dr. Mahamadou Tounkara, GGGI's Regional Director for MENA, the panel garnered invaluable insights from H.E Bader Al Dafa, Qatar's Special Envoy for Climate Change and Sustainability and Commissioner General of Expo 2023 Doha. The discourse was further enriched by contributions from H.E Mattias Frumerie, Sweden's Climate Ambassador to the UNFCCC, and Mr. Mahmoud Al Marwani, the esteemed Assistant Director of the Climate Change Department at Qatar's Ministry of Environment and Climate Change.

H.E Bader Al Dafa delivered a comprehensive presentation detailing Qatar’s stride in sustainability, particularly in transforming arid landscapes into flourishing green spaces through technological innovation. He reflected on Qatar's journey, from the initial challenges of engaging countries in Expo 2023 Doha to proudly hosting representatives from 82 nations. Speaking on the commitment to environmental initiatives, H.E Bader Al Dafa stressed the importance of international collaboration, remarking: "In a world that is increasingly interconnected, the act of serving our environment transcends beyond regional efforts; it is a global mission. By leveraging cutting-edge technology, we have overcome the constraints of our geographical landscape to not only support our ecosystem but to also aid our international allies, especially in times of unforeseen crises." He emphasized Qatar’s proactive participation in international climate dialogues and its realistic approach to addressing the differentiated needs and challenges of developing countries in the realm of climate change.

H.E Mattias Frumerie, Sweden’s Climate Ambassador, highlighted the dual success of Sweden in environmental and economic arenas, advocating for a strategy that doesn't compromise economic growth for environmental sustainability. "Sweden's journey since 1990 illustrates a clear decoupling of emissions from economic growth. It's imperative that we share these successes and strategies, as they are testimonies that innovation not only supports but also propels climate action," he remarked.

Mr. Mahmoud Al Marwani illustrated Qatar’s commitment through tangible initiatives aligned with the Qatar National Vision 2023. He underlined that robust policies and cutting-edge technologies are crucial in addressing the varied impacts of climate change. "The environmental accomplishments we witness today in Qatar are a direct result of strategic planning and the deployment of innovative technologies that ensure our resilience against climate adversities," he explained.

The panel discussion highlighted the essential need for global collaboration, the exchange of technological solutions, and the support for developing countries in the collective fight against climate change. Expo 2023 Doha continues to serve as a pivotal stage for such high-calibre climate dialogues, echoing Qatar's unwavering commitment to sustainable development and environmental stewardship.
